Girlfriend emerged from New York City’s downtown music scene in the early 1990s, where Robin Cryer and Phil Hyland began writing songs together and performing throughout the city. Their debut album, The New Me, was released nationally in 1997.

Then the music went quiet.

Nearly 30 years later, Girlfriend is opening the vault—uncovering original tapes, unfinished sessions and songs that were once live favorites but never made it onto a record.

Part musical archaeology, part time travel, these rediscovered recordings capture the sound of 1990s New York and the story of a young couple navigating a nascent relationship through music.

The songs survived. Now they're finally being heard.
